MOON TOWNSHIP, Pa. – The Army West Point hockey team took a 1-0 lead in the second period, but Robert Morris scored two consecutive goals to clinch the Friday night game of the weekend series 2-1.
ARMY HIGHLIGHTS AND GAME NOTES
The Black Knights fell to 2-2-1 overall and 2-1-0 in Atlantic Hockey contests.
Brendan Soucie recorded Army’s lone goal of the night in the second period. The freshman netted the bar-down goal on a breakaway opportunity.
It was his second collegiate goal with the first coming against Sacred Heart.
Nick DeCenzo and Ian Mansfield were both credited with the assists. This was Mansfield’s second helper of the year and DeCenzo’s first of the season after he switched to the defensive side of the puck.
In goal, Parker Gahagen faced 30 shots and made 28 saves.
HOW IT HAPPENED
The Black Knights earned the first power play opportunity of the night with 3:35 remaining in the first period. The Colonials blocked a few shots though and took their own man-up advantage after a tripping call.
Soucie gave Army a 1-0 lead with 12:46 on the board after a bar-down goal while going one-on-one with the Colonials’ goalie.
Robert Morris answered back with a goal two minutes later at the 10:43 mark to tie things up at 1-1. Then with 2:48 left to play in the second, the Colonials notched a power play goal to push ahead 2-1.
In the third period, Army took a few opportunities with 10 minutes remaining. First, Clint Carlisle attempted to poke in his own rebound and the puck danced along the goal line, but did not cross. A few possessions later, Tyler Pham had a one-on-one with the Colonial’s goaltender saved the shot to his right hip.
