HAMILTON – The Colgate men’s ice hockey team scored two goals in the first 6:05 of the third period to comeback and tie the Maine Black Bears, 2-2, in overtime Friday night at Class of 1965 Arena.
Tyler Penner (Winnipeg, Manitoba) found the back of the net for the first time in his career after another solid game and fellow freshman Bobby McMann (Wainwright, Alberta) netted his first career two-point game for the Raiders. John Snodgrass (Eagan, Minnesota) rounded out the all-freshmen scoring affair for the Raiders with his third assist of the season.
The third period was one of Colgate’s best periods of the season, outshooting Maine 16-3, as well as a 3-0 edge in the overtime period. Penner ended Colgate’s drought just 41 seconds into the third period to cut Maine’s lead to 2-1. McMann’s initial shot went wide right of the goal and the rebound came right out to Penner, who managed to jam the puck between Maine goaltender Rob McGovern’s skate and the right post.
McGovern had one of his best games of the season for the Black Bears, making 39 saves on 41 Raider shots for the second most saves in a game in his career. Colgate’s 41 shots were it’s most since the final game of the 2015-16 season, a 4-3 loss in double overtime at Dartmouth in the ECAC Hockey Quarterfinals.
The Raiders tied the game, 2-2, with 13:55 left in the third period on McMann’s second tally of the season. Adam Dauda (Kitchener, Ontario) won a faceoff in the offensive zone, but the Black Bears won the battle in the corner and attempted to wrap the puck around the boards to get it out. Snodgrass stopped the puck just before the blue line and fired the puck toward the goal where McMann collected it and backhanded it past McGovern’s blocker side.
Colgate goaltender Charlie Finn (North Vancouver, British Columbia) recorded his second tie of the season with a 29 save performance between the pipes, moving him into third place all-time in Colgate men’s ice hockey history with 2,641 saves, passing Dan Brenzavich ’98.
After a scoreless first period, Maine took a 1-0 lead on a power-play goal with 9:56 left in the second period. Blaine Byron hit Eric Schurhamer with a point-to-point pass where Schurhamer fired a shot from the right point. Finn made the initial save but the rebound squeaked out and Pearson put it home.
An icing by the Raiders led to the Black Bears second goal of the game with 2:08 left in the second period to make it 2-0. Maine executed another point-to-point pass as Mark Hamilton found Rob Michel on the right point. Michel deked around a Colgate defender and fired a shot on goal that was tipped by Nolan Vesey for his third goal of the season.

“The third period was clearly our best period of the game. We had some great looks early; too, we hit the pipe at the end of the second period and had a couple of really good looks, one that was on top of [McGovern’s] belly at one point.
“We’re not getting a lot of puck luck and, you know, the guys are working hard and we got rewarded some in the third period tonight when we battled back from down 2-0 and against a goalie that was playing really well. I was pleased with our effort; certainly we’re not pleased with a tie. We wanted to get the win.”
