Canton, NY – Tess Adams (Calgary, AB) and Jessica Pele (Estevan, SK) scored back-to-back goals in a 46 second span in the final three minutes to lift the SUNY Canton women’s hockey team to a 3-2 victory against visiting University of New England on Saturday afternoon.
With the come-from-behind win the Roos improve to 2-0-0, while the Nor’easters fall to 0-2-0.
After a back-and-forth opening period SUNY Canton finally broke through at 13:37 on the power play. Alyssa Hein (Regina, SK) swung the puck from right to left to Lora Ardoin (Houston, TX) at the high right circle. Her shot deflected to Rhea Coad (Wheatfield, NY) at the near post who put home the goal far post past the glove side of Sydney Helmbrecht.
The Roos took a 1-0 lead into intermission behind nine first period saves from Brooke Susac (Bowmanville, ON).
The Nor’easters knotted the score at one 8:28 into the middle frame with the extra skater. Melissa Boudreau set up the play behind the net finding Annie Mullen at the top of the right circle. She played a cross-ice pass to Emily Corrales in the low slot beating Susac over the stick. The teams played to a 1-1 tie after 40 minutes.
Corrales regained the UNE lead 13:20 into the third when she scored off a broken play on a wrap-around from behind the net going left to right beating Susac just inside the right post. Gabrielle Moscato and Vanessa VanBurkirk earned helpers on the play.
SUNY Canton evened the contest at two with 2:46 remaining when Margret Troiano (Morristown, NY) used a great piece of defensive play that led the Roos on a rush. Troiano found Adams for her second goal in as many days.
SUNY Canton seized the momentum as the Nor’easters were whistled for a hooking penalty on the goal and immediately went on the power play. That paid off 46 seconds into the skater advantage as Hein swung a pass out to the point to Ardoin who played a cross-ice pass to the top of the right circle to Pele. The assistant captain rifled a low shot over the glove of Helmbrecht inside the right post which proved to be the game-winner.
Suscac stopped 29 shots in her second consecutive win, while Helmbrecht made 25 saves for UNE. Canton was 2-for-10 on the power play, while the Nor’easters went 1-for-7.
