BROCKPORT, N.Y. – The No. 12/12 Oswego State men’s ice hockey team defeated the Brockport Golden Eagles 5-1 on Friday evening to move to 3-0 overall and earn their first SUNYAC win (1-0). Brockport falls to 0-1-1 and 0-1 in the conference.
Oswego got all of the offense it needed in the first 17 minutes of the contest, which allowed the Lakers to prevail in this one. Aaron Huffnagle and Chris Raguseo provided the scores, at the 9:12 and 16:02 marks, respectively. Both goals were of the unassisted fashion.
The Lakers benefitted from a masterful performance in goal, even more so than what the stat line shows. David Jacobson shutdown all offensive pressure from the Golden Eagles for the first 54 minutes, before Brockport was able to sneak a power play goal beneath the goalie’s pads. The Calabasas, Calif. native recorded 23 saves, including snagging several shots out of the air. Jacobson played all 60 minutes in goal and raised his save percentage to .925 on the year.
In the second period, Jody Sullivan helped extend the Lakers lead with an unassisted power-play tally in the period’s 16th minute. It was the freshman’s third goal of the season, as he has now scored in each of his first-three career games.
Chris Waterstreet and Shawn Hulshof provided the momentum-killing goals for Oswego, just shortly after Brockport tallied a score. Waterstreet received the puck on a line from TJ Sneath and put in the back of the goal at the 14:22 mark. With three seconds remaining in the game, Hulshof nearly duplicated the earlier play, but was assisted by Chris MacMillan.
Elsewhere, Oswego tallied 35 shots in the contest and went 1-for-4 on power play chances. The nationally-ranked Lakers also won 56 percent (33-of-59) of the possible face-offs.
Men’s ice hockey will continue conference play at 7 p.m. on Saturday, as it returns to the Marano Campus Center Arena for a contest with the No. 4/4 Geneseo Knights.
