CORTLAND, N.Y. – Freshman Sean Perichak (Oakville, ON/Markham Royals) scored the game-winning goal with 2:54 remaining in the third period as Cortland edged Brockport, 5-4, in a SUNYAC men’s ice hockey contest. The Red Dragons evened their record at 2-2 overall and 1-1 in league play. Brockport is now 0-2-1 overall and 0-2 in the SUNYAC.

Cortland led 2-0 after one period on goals by freshman Aidan Salerno (East Atlantic Beach/Soo Thunderbirds) and junior Cory Lauer (Mt. Juliet, TN/Toronto Lakeshore Patriots). Salerno’s goal came with Cortland on a two-man advantage. Brockport, however, scored three times in the second – twice on the power play – and led 3-2 after two periods. Trevor Simonick scored with a skater advantage 1:18 into the period, followed by an even strength goal by Aidan Verbeke at the 13:37 mark and a Tim Kielich power play goal with 37 seconds left.

The Golden Eagles started the third period on another power play, but Cortland instead quickly tied the game on Salerno’s second goal of the night – a shorthanded tally with just 10 seconds elapsed. The Red Dragons then went up 4-3 on senior Casie Garrison’s (Cortland/Philadelphia Revolution) first goal of the season 4:17 into the period.

Brockport knotted the game on an unassisted goal by Bryan Carville with 3:35 remaining, but Perichak netted the go-ahead goal for the Red Dragons just 41 seconds later off assists from Garrison and freshman Nico Gonzalez (Buffalo/Toronto Jr. Canadiens).

A Cortland penalty – its 13th of the game – gave Brockport a final power play opportunity with 1:43 remaining. The Golden Eagles also pulled their goalie with 1:35 left for a two skater advantage, but the Red Dragons held tough as junior Drew Weigman (Annapolis, MD/Northern Cyclones) made four of his 42 saves to preserve the victory. Weigman stopped 18 of the 19 shots on goal he faced in the third period.

Salerno finished with two goals and one assist, Perichak and Garrison each recorded a goal and an assist, and freshman Stefano Alonzi (Maple, ON/Burlington Cougars) notched two assists for the Red Dragons. Cortland’s penalty kill unit successfully fended off 11 of Brockport’s 13 power play opportunities.

Brockport goalie Jake Moore recorded 30 saves and Carville finished with a goal and an assist.

Cortland will host Oswego on Friday, November 11, at 7 p.m. in a SUNYAC contest.
