PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The Colgate men’s ice hockey team’s third period comeback bid fell short Saturday afternoon despite a pair of third period goals as the Raiders fell to the Brown Bears, 4-2, at Meehan Auditorium.
Brett Corkey (Calgary, Alberta) and Jared Cockrell (Byfield, Massachusetts) each scored extra-attacker, power-play goals in the third period for their second goals of the season but the Raiders couldn’t add any more.
Colgate’s two extra-attacker goals marks the first time they’ve accomplished the feat since Oct. 4, 2015, at Mercyhurst.
Corkey’s goal was his second of the weekend after scoring in the Raiders 4-1 win over the No. 19 Yale Bulldogs on Friday night. It was also Corkey’s second goal of the season and fifth point overall.
Bobby McMann (Wainwright, Alberta) and John Snodgrass (Eagan, Minnesota) also scored their second points of the weekend with assists on Corkey’s goal. Jake Kulevich (Marblehead, Massachusetts) added his fourth assist of the season while Adam Dauda (Kitchener, Ontario) returned to the score sheet with his team-leading eighth point of the year.
Colgate attempted to start a comeback with 10:27 left in the third period as Corkey ended Brown goaltender Tim Ernst’s shutout bid. Finn had just been pulled for the six-on-three extra-attacker opportunity when McMann rifled a shot on goal but it went wide off the glass. The rebound sailed out to Corkey on the left wing where he flung the puck past a scurrying Ernst to make it 4-1.
Cockrell cut the Bears lead in half with 1:37 to play in the third period. Kulevich slid a centering feed into the slot Dauda who mistimed the one-timer and had his shot partially blocked by the Brown defense. Cockrell was right on top of the crease where he managed to corral the puck and whiz it past Ernst for the extra-attacker, power-play goal.
Brown took a 1-0 lead with 12:50 to play in the second period on Connor Wynne’s first career goal. The Bears skated into the offensive zone on an odd-man rush with Andrew Doane controlling the puck. Doane fed Wynne streaking up the left side where he wristed the puck off the far-side post and into the net for the goal.
The Bears doubled their lead late in the second period to make it 2-0. Finn saved Tyler Bird’s initial shot but the rebound dribbled out of the crease where Charlie Corcoran was positioned to jam home the puck.
Max Willman netted his third goal of the season to give the Bears a 3-0 lead with 15:49 left in the third period on Brown’s second power-play goal of the game. After winning the faceoff in the offensive zone to start the power play, the Bears worked the puck up to Max Gottlieb at the left point. Finn stopped Gottlieb’s shot but Willman was on the door for the rebound.
Brown added a third power play goal to take a 4-0 lead with 12:24 left in the third period. After winning the offensive zone faceoff with a five-on-three advantage, Brown worked the puck around the zone before Finn stopped Sam Lafferty’s shot from the left side. Once again, the rebound kicked out and Tyler Bird was on the doorstep to put it home.
