ROCHESTER, N.Y. — There were goals galore for Nazareth Sunday in men’s hockey as the Golden Flyers erupted for a school-record 10 tallies in a 10-2 romp over visiting Lebanon Valley at the Bill Gray'[s Regional Iceplex.
Nine different players scored for the Golden Flyers, who salvaged a weekend split of two ECAC West conference games. Sunday’s win in the first-ever meeting between the two teams, improved Nazareth’s overall record to 3-2-1 and their conference mark to 3-1. Lebanon Valley is 0-5-1 overall and 0-4 in conference play. The 10 goals broke the previous single-game record of nine goals scored against Western New England in 2012.
After a disappointing loss to Stevenson on Saturday, Nazareth rebounded with a vengance by unleashing 45 shots on two Lebanon Valley netminders. The Golden Flyers scored twice in the first period before exploding for seven goals in the second to break the game open. Freshman Brian Miller was the only multiple goal scorer for Nazareth as he delivered two goals and added one assist. Senior Dominik Gabaj added one goal and two assists and sophomore Brad Pizzey and junior Oliver Janzen each contributed three assists. Freshman Phil Kreuser netted his first collegiate goal in the second period.
Miller, who picked up his first career goal in Saturday’s loss to Stevenson, put Nazareth on top at 12:28 of the opening period as he knocked in a rebound off a shot by Gabaj. Four minutes later, junior John Power scored his third goal of the season with an assist for Pizzey.
The seven goals in the second period included a power play tally for sophomore David Powlowski, who scored for the first time this season off assists from Pizzey and junior Matt Manzella.
First Kreuser and sophomore J.R. Wojciechowski scored goals 50 seconds apart, the came Powlowski’s goal to put Nazareth up 5-0. Goals by Austin Romzek, Justin LaCorte, C.J. Murray and Miller closed out the period with the Golden Flyers on top 9-0.
Lebanon Valley finally got on the scoreboard early in the third period as Brett Johnson netted a pair of power play goals that came exactly one minute apart. Gabaj then closed out the scoring for Nazareth with his team-leading sixth goal off power play assists from Janzen and Miller.
Senior Brandon Lane made his sixth straight start in goal and finished with 18 saves before giving way to freshman Andy Lee, who made his first appearance of the season and totaled seven saves.
Nazareth returns to action Friday as the Golden Flyers visit Hobart for their first road game of the season. Nazareth also is back home Saturday to host Elmira at 7 p.m.
