William Smith Tops Chatham, 4-2

PITTSBURGH, Pa. – The William Smith College ice hockey team defeated Chatham 4-2 at the Alpha Ice Complex this evening. The win was the Herons first in ECAC West play this season.

William Smith (3-4-0, 1-4-0) was led by sophomore Maura Mulligan and first-year Taylor Morash who each scored twice in the victory for the Herons. First-year Jordan Roetzer tallied a pair of assists in the win.

Mulligan’s first goal of the season and game gave William smith a 1-0 lead at 12:22 of the first period. Her power-play goal was assisted by junior Krista Federow and sophomore Stephanie Hampton. Mulligan collected a loose puck right in front of the goal and wristed a shot past Chatham goalie Sydney Isbell. The Herons carried the 1-0 lead into the first intermission, holding a 10-8 edge in shots on goal.

Five of the game’s six goals were scored in the middle 20 minutes. Morash got things started when she doubled the Herons lead at 6:50 of the second period. She collected a pass from Roetzer and flipped it past Isbell. It ws Morash’s first collegiate goal. The Cougars (0-5-0, 0-5-0), drew within a goal less than a minute later when Michelle Jones pocketed her first goal of the season. McKenzie Haskins was credited with an assist on the goal.

Forty-seven seconds later, William Smith regained a two goal lead when Morash tallied her second goal of the game. The unassisted goal was scored at 8:30 of the second period.

Less than two minutes later, Cassidy Colhoun notched a power-play goal to make it 3-2. Kasandra Petersen and Emma McFarlane were awarded assists on the goal.

Mulligan added a second power-play goal at 17:21 of the second period. Junior Rebecca Begley<http://hwsathletics.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=11112> and Roetzer picked up assists on the insurance goal for the Herons.

Neither team could find the back of the net in the third period.

Junior Maggie Salmon improved to 3-3-0 on the season in goal for William Smith after stopping 46 of the 48 shots she faced, 22 of which came in the final period. Isbell stopped 21 of the 25 shots in the Chatham goal.

The Herons were 2-6 on the power play, while the Cougars finished the game 1-9 with the extra attacker.

William Smith and Chatham will meet again tomorrow at the Alpha Ice Complex. Faceoff is scheduled for 2:30 p.m.
