MORRISVILLE, N.Y. — The No. 1 Oswego State men’s ice hockey team downed the Morrisville State Mustangs 4-1 on Friday evening. Oswego remains undefeated at 8-0-0 and 6-0-0 in the conference, while the Mustangs fall to 1-7-2 and 1-5-1 in the SUNYAC.
Oswego used a goal in each period, including an insurance empty-net goal to skate past the host Mustangs in the first end of the home-and-home series. Just under 12 minutes into the contest, Matt Galati got the scoring started with a ripping slapshot off a crisp feed from Mitchell Herlihey.
After Matt Zawadzki stopped the first eight opposing shots, Morrisville’s David Landau notched his second goal of the season on a power play opportunity. Nonetheless, Zawadzki doubled down and stop every other attempt the rest of the way to secure 19 saves and the win.
Following the Mustang goal, the Lakers got all of the scoring they would need off a tally from Alex Botten. Shawn Hulshof found Kenny Neil, who sent it to Botten for the score, marking his fourth of the year.
Hulshof was not done on the ice as the senior found the net twice in the final 20 minutes, providing plenty of cushion for his team. On a power play, which carried over from the end of the second, Hulshof scored a putback off the stick of Galati. The Stouffville, Ont. native went on to score his fifth goal of the season and tallied his third point of the day with an empty-net goal at 19:53 of the third.
The nation’s number one team will return home at 7 p.m. on Saturday as it finishes up the two-game set with the Mustangs. Be sure to bring a stuffed animal to participate in the team’s first-annual Teddy Bear Toss. Canned goods, toys and donations are all welcome also as Oswego continues to help out the United Way during the holiday season.
