PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Junior Mike Prapavessis and Viktor Liljegren each recorded two points, but the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) men’s hockey team fell at Brown University, 6-3, on Saturday at Meehan Auditorium. With the win, the Bears improve to 3-9-0 (2-6-0 ECAC Hockey), while the Engineers drop to 3-16-1 (1-9-0 ECAC Hockey).
Brown opened the scoring at 8:23 of the first period, when junior Sam Lafferty (Hollidayburg, PA) gather a feed in front of the RPI net and stuck it past a sliding Chase Perry (Andover, MN/Wenatchee Wild) for his third goal of the year. Classmate Charlie Corcoran (New Canaan, CT) and senior captain Andrew Doane (Holiston, MA) picked up the assists.
Senior captain Jimmy DeVito (Bloomingdale, IL/Lincoln Stars) pulled Rensselaer even (1-1) at 13:02 of the period. Junior Lou Nanne (Edina, MN/Sioux Falls Stampede) found DeVito in the right corner, before he beat Brown freshman goalie Gavin Nieto (Yorba Linda, CA) from a tight angle. The second assist on DeVito’s second goal in two games went to Prapavessis (Oakville, ON/Toronto Patriots).
The Bears regained the lead (2-1) with under four minutes to play in the opening stanza on senior Davey Middleton’s (Novi, MI) first goal of the season. Helpers went to freshman blueliner Joe Maguire (Dix Hills, NY) and junior Tyler Bird (Andover, MA).
Sophomore defenseman Brady Schoo (Eden Prairie, MN) made it a 3-1 game, 2:39 into the second period. His shot from the top of the right circle found its way through sophomore goaltender Cam Hackett (Sault Ste. Marie, ON/Lincoln Stars) and just over the goal line. Shoo’s first of the season was assisted on by Maguire and sophomore Tommy Marchin (Alogonac, MI).
Rensselaer then drew even, scoring a pair of power play goals to close out the frame. Senior captain Riley Bourbonnais (Rochester, NY/Lincoln Stars) drew the Engineers within 3-2, with a snap shot just under the crossbar from the bottom of the right circle.
Prapavessis then netted the equalizing goal at 12:51 of the second, with assists to Liljegren (Stockholm, Sweden/Fairbanks IceDogs) and Hackett.
Bears sophomore Conner Wynne (Pomona, NY) broke the tie at 11:32 of the third, firing just inside left post, from between the circles. Lappin and freshman Brent Beaudoin (Londonderry, NH) earned the assists on Wynne’s second of the season.
Corcoran and Beaudoin added empty-netters at 18:59 and 19:49, respectively, to cap the scoring.
The Engineers finished 2 for 3 on the power play, while the Bears went 0 for 2. Brown held a 34-22 edge in shots.
RPI is now off until December 30, when it travels to No. 6 Harvard (7pm). Brown travels to Arizona for the Desert Hockey Classic on December 30 and 31.
