BINGHAMTON, N.Y. – Max McCormick recorded a three-point night, including the game-winning goal in overtime, to propel the Binghamtom Semators to a 4-3 victory over the visiting St. John’s IceCaps at Floyd L. Maines Veterans Memorial Arena on Wednesday night.
The IceCaps got on the board at the 4:42 mark of the first period. A B-Sens’ player gloved down a high shot in front of home goalie, Matt O’Connor, and David Broll was right by the crease to poke it in. Yannick Veilleux and Jonathan Racine were awarded the assists on Broll’s second goal of the year.
Guillaume Lepine responded with his first goal of the season 24 seconds later to tie the game up 1-1. Francis Perron found a streaking Lepine across the ice and passed to the faceoff circle where Lepine sent a one-timer over Charlie Lindgren’s blocker hand. Chris Carlisle picked up the secondary assist on the goal.
The IceCaps took the one-goal lead after Chris Terry added to his team-leading power-play goals with less than seven minutes to play. Terry knocked the puck past O’Connor’s right shoulder after getting help from Mark Barberio and Sven Andrighetto. The B-Sens went to the first intermission trailing 2-1 despite outshooting the IceCaps 12-6.
Phil Varone scored the lone tally of the middle frame to bring it back to a tie game at two apiece. Max McCormick fed the puck to Jason Akeson who was going behind the net and found Varone coming up the middle who scored his sixth goal of the year. The teams entered the final intermission tied 2-2 with Binghamton dominating the shots 29-13.
Binghamton took the 3-2 lead just over nine minutes into the third after Buddy Robinson scored the go-ahead goal. McCormick sent a cross-ice pass to Kyle Flanagan on the left side of Lindgren who then backhanded the puck to Robinson alone in the slot. Robinson scored his fourth of the year and gave the B-Sens the first lead of the night.
The game was tied once again four minutes later after Andrighetto capitalized on another power-play opportunity. Andrighetto scored his eighth goal of the season while Carlisle sat in the box with Terry and Barberio picking up the assists. The 3-3 score brought the teams to overtime with the B-Sens outshooting the IceCaps 37-20.
After a strong two minutes in overtime from both teams, McCormick scored the game-winning goal to give the B-Sens the 4-3 win. McCormick went over the blue line and moved through defenders before dropping the puck off to Patrick Sieloff. After the shot was stopped by Lindgren, McCormick gathered the rebound and lifted the puck over Lindgren’s pads for the win.
O’Connor picked up the win after stopping 17 shots while Lindgren had 36 saves in the losing effort.
