Vänder Esch, Young Capture SUNYAC Player of the Week Honors

POTSDAM, N.Y.-After a weekend sweep at Nazareth College over the weekend, SUNY Potsdam men’s hockey players Dylan Vander Esch (San Jose, Calif./Hartford Wolfpack) and Tyler Young (Massena, N.Y./Kanata Lasers) have earned the first SUNYAC Player of the Week awards for 2017. Vander Esch is the conference’s player of the week and Young earns rookie of the week recognition.

Vander Esch had four points in the Bears’ two victories. He scored Potsdam’s first goal in a 6-3 come-from-behind win on Friday. The following afternoon, he played a part in all three of the Bears’ goals in another rally for a 3-2 win. He assisted on Potsdam’s first goal, with the Bears trailing 1-0. He then scored the game-tying and game-winning goals in the third period to seal the victory.

Vander Esch is tied for the team lead in scoring this season with nine goals and four assists for 13 points, while playing in all 14 games. In his career, the junior forward has 41 goals and 21 assists for 62 points in 63 contests.

Young also broke out with four points this weekend. In the opener, he scored two goals and assisted on another for a three-point night. On Saturday, he assisted on Potsdam’s first goal of the afternoon.

In his debut season, the freshman forward is fourth on the team in scoring with three goals and four assists for seven points in 11 games.

The Bears are back in action this Friday when they head down Route 11 to open a home-and-home series at Canton at 7 p.m.
