Joel Vermin scored two goals to help Syracuse defeat Grand Rapids 5-3 in Game 3 of the Calder Cup Finals at Onondaga County War Memorial Arena in Syracuse, New York, on Wednesday.
Grand Rapids, the American Hockey League affiliate of the Detroit Red Wings, leads the best-of-7 series 2-1.
Vermin scored at 15:31 and 16:28 of the first period to give Syracuse a 3-1 lead. Byron Froese put Syracuse ahead 1-0 seven minutes into the game, but Grand Rapids forward Tyler Bertuzzi tied it 1-1 at 9:17.
Dominic Turgeon scored to make it 3-2 6:58 into the second period, but Syracuse, the AHL affiliate of the Tampa Bay Lightning, went ahead 5-2 on goals by Tye McGinn (13:22) and Cory Conacher (15:18).
Kyle Criscuolo scored with 3:22 left in the second to make it 5-3.
Syracuse goalie Mike McKenna made 32 saves, and Jared Coreau had 27 for Grand Rapids.
Game 4 is at Syracuse on Friday.
