BROOKLYN, NY – Sarah Edney, a member of the Canadian National Team program who in 2015 helped lead Harvard to the NCAA championship game, will play for the Buffalo Beauts in the upcoming NWHL season. Edney and the Beauts have reached an agreement in principle for 2017-18.
“The idea of being part of the intense competition of the NWHL and helping Buffalo defend the Isobel Cup is really thrilling to me,” said Edney, who as a senior was the recipient of the 2014-15 ECAC Best Defender Award. “Buffalo is not far from home and I have so many close friends in the U.S. from my college years. I can’t wait to get started in October.”
Edney, 24, was the first overall selection in the 2015 CWHL Draft and played the last two seasons with the Brampton (now Markham) Thunder. The 5-6 defender from Mississauga, Ontario had 9 goals and 11 assists for 20 points in 34 games.
“The hardest part for me is leaving my teammates with the Thunder,” said Edney. “We had a close-knit team. I also want to acknowledge all of the volunteers around the Thunder franchise that made my time there so special. I’m eternally grateful to them.”
At Harvard, Edney had at least 20 points in each of her four seasons. Over 127 games with the Crimson, she was 25-63-88. In 2014-15, she scored a collegiate career-best 8 goals. Among her other honors that season were ECAC First Team selection, ECAC Player of the Year Finalist and ECAC Tournament Most Outstanding Player. She was an All-Ivy League honoree four times.
At the international level, Edney was the captain of Team Canada’s Under-18 team, which won the silver medal at the 2011 Women’s World U-18 Championship. This month, Edney served as a development camp coach for the Under-18 Canadian National Team.
