OSWEGO, N.Y. – The Oswego State women’s ice hockey team opened its 2017-18 campaign with a 4-3 overtime loss in an exhibition game against the Toronto Midget Aeros on Saturday afternoon in the Marano Campus Center Arena. Oswego’s regular season will begin at 7 p.m. on Friday when it hosts New England College.
Toronto struck first and was the only team to score in the first period but Oswego answered with two goals in the middle period. Natalie Giglio tallied the equalizer at 6:56 of the second on assists from Jean-marie Padden and Leah Czerwinski. In the final two minutes of the second, the Lakers gained their first lead when Padden found the back of the net. At 18:23, Kate Randazzo and Andrea Noss teamed up to find Padden for the go-ahead goal.
The Aeros were able to knot the game at 2-2 in the opening minute of the final period but Oswego again had the answer. Noss, Randazzo and Padden again combined for a goal, this time with Noss finishing. With less than three minutes to play, however, Toronto was able to score and force extra time.
At 57 seconds of the overtime period, Toronto notched the game-winning goal.
Toronto was opportunistic, scoring twice on three power-play chances. Oswego also recorded a power-play goal on one of its four opportunities.
The Lakers played all three of their goalies on Saturday, as Mariah Madrigal started, Mikaela Ditonto earned the middle period and Amber Samonek played the final period and OT. Each of the first two goalies made nine saves apiece while Samonek stopped eight shots.
