HAMILTON – Colton Point (North Bay, Ontario) needed just 20 saves Friday night to earn his first career shutout as the Colgate men’s ice hockey team blanked the Arizona State Sun Devils, 3-0, at Class of 1965 Arena.

Colgate’s shutout was its first since Feb. 26, 2016 in a 2-0 shutout of Rensselaer while it’s the Raiders first non-conference shutout since Oct. 31, 2014 against Mercyhurst.

Point was consistent all game long, making the big saves when needed and had no more than seven saves in every period. One of his biggest stops of the game came with five minutes left in the third period as Joey Raats snuck down for the back door shot but Point slid across the crease to turn away the shot.

Three different Raiders scored goals Friday night with one goal coming in each period of play.

Tyler Jeanson (Carman, Manitoba) got the scoring started with 3:20 left in the first period on his first goal since sc31815oring the first men’s goal of the 2017-18 college hockey season. Evan Peterson (Lakeville, Minnesota) carried the puck up the right wing before his shot was kicked away by Arizona State goaltender Joey Daccord. The rebound jumped over Jeanson’s stick where Jacob Panetta (Belleville, Ontario) blasted a one-timer but that too was saved. Jeanson chased down the rebound behind the goal and fired the puck towards the goal, bouncing it off Daccord from a nearly impossible angle.

The Raiders clung to that 1-0 lead until Bobby McMann (Wainwright, Alberta) doubled the Raiders lead with 2.9 seconds left in the second period. After a Louie Rowe penalty put Colgate on the power play, the Raiders eventually chased down a loose puck in the right circle of the offensive zone. Adam Dauda (Kitchener, Ontario) went to play the puck and just touched it before John Snodgrass (Eagan, Minnesota) pushed the puck to McMann at the top of the right circle. McMann released a one-timer as he fell to one knee that made it past Daccord’s glove side.

Midway through the third period, Peterson tallied his first goal of the season to make it 3-0. Jeanson stole the puck in his own defensive end and worked the puck to Hunter Racine (Ottawa, Ontario) skating up the right side. Arizona State’s Jacob Wilson knocked the puck away from Racine and ultimately chased down the puck, turned and tried to clear the puck from near his own end line. But Wilson’s clear attempt went right to Peterson skating down the slot where he collected the puck and wristed home the goal past Daccord’s glove.

FROM THE SOURCE
Head Coach Don Vaughan
“We had a bit of a slow start, the first period was just okay and we talked about it after the first period. We dodged a couple of bullets early but as the game wore on, we did get better. It was clearly our best defensive effort of the season, Colton made some big saves and he always makes those look easy but we played better in front of him. Our six guys back there battled hard for pucks and we escaped better from our own end than we have a lot of other nights.”

“It’s important, he’s played well throughout his career. Every goalie wants to see that zero up on the board, and he’s worked very hard to get that. He had a great summer and unfortunately he missed two games earlier this season but he’s a really good goaltender and you can’t win in this league without it. We’re very fortunate that we have him back there.”

“We were searching for some offense from our forwards, that was the main reason for the line shuffling. Hunter hasn’t played in a bit but as a veteran, he responded like you expect someone to that sat for a couple games. [Jeanson’s] been really good since day one, he’s one of the hardest compete players on our team. That was a solid line for us tonight.”

“[Arizona State’s] coaching staff wasn’t pleased with their effort tonight and I’m sure we’ll see a big push-back from them tomorrow…We may make a couple more adjustments to our lineup tomorrow to get some other guys some looks, we’re still a work in progress and trying to get lines set as we get ready for league play next season.”
