ITHACA, N.Y. — ECAC Hockey announced Tuesday that Cornell senior forward Trevor Yates has been named the league’s Player of the Week after his four-point weekend in the Big Red’s two-game sweep of Alabama-Huntsville at Lynah Rink.
Yates turned in a dominating performance on the power play, where he scored three goals in the two contests against the Chargers. His goal on a redirection of freshman Cam Donaldson’s shot in Friday’s season-opener proved to be the game-winner, then he gave the Big Red breathing room on Saturday with the second and third goals in a 3-0 victory. All 11 of Yates’ career power-play goals have come in his last 34 games.
Yates also had an assist on the weekend, setting up junior defenseman Matt Nuttle’s game-winning goal in the fourth minute of Saturday’s contest. It was Yates’ second career three-point game, with the other coming last Jan. 20 against Clarkson. His four points for the weekend were tied for the most among any ECAC Hockey skaters.
This is the first career ECAC Hockey weekly honor for Yates. For all of the Big Red’s success last season, it only took home the ECAC Hockey Player of the Week accolade once — on Nov. 15, following Mitch Vanderlaan’s hat trick at Yale.
Cornell, which re-emerged in the USCHO.com national poll this week at 18th, starts ECAC Hockey play this weekend with a trip to #11/12 Quinnipiac at 7 p.m. Friday and Princeton at 7 p.m. Saturday.
