CORTLAND, N.Y. – The No. 8/9 Oswego State men’s ice hockey team defeated Cortland, 3-1, in its first SUNYAC matchup of the season on Friday evening. With the win, the Lakers improve to 2-1 overall and 1-0 in conference play, while Cortland falls to 0-3 overall and starts conference play with a 0-1 record.

Just 4:30 into the game, forward Mitch Emerson put the Lakers on the board with an unassisted goal. It was the sophomore’s second career goal and his first of the 2017-18 season. Less than 10 minutes later, classmate Jody Sullivan added to the Laker lead. Cameron Berry and Joseph Molinaro each collected an assist on Sullivan’s goal.

The Lakers tacked on their final goal in the third period. Just over eight minutes into the period, sophomore Michael Gillespie shot it past the Red Dragon goalie to bring the score to 3-1. Reigning Oswego State Athlete of the Week Josh Zizek notched an assist on the goal.

Oswego dominated on offense, with 48 shots compared to the Red Dragons’ 19. Goalie David Richer, who played all 60 minutes for the Lakers, stopped 18 of Cortland’s shots.

The Lakers return to the ice at 7 p.m. on Nov. 11 when they host Canton for Military Appreciation Night.
