MAGNITOGORSK, RUSSIA—Former SUNY Potsdam hockey player Chris Lee ’04 has re-signed with Metallurg Magnitogorsk of the Kontinental Hockey League.
Lee has spent the last four seasons with Metallurg and was the league’s top scoring defenseman last season with 14 goals and 51 assists for 65 points in 60 games. He has helped the team to Gargarin Cup Championships in 2014 and 2016 and he netted the game-winner in Game Seven in the latter. Lee returns to Russia after making a bid to become the NHL’s oldest rookie in a tryout with the Los Angeles Kings this fall.
Lee is also a member Team Canada’s preliminary 2018 Olympic roster. The MacTier, Ontario native has represented his nation at the 2012 and 2016 Deutschland Cups and the International Ice Hockey Federation World Championships last spring in Paris. He’ll compete for the Canadians again at the Karjala Cup Tournament in Helsinki, Finland from Nov. 8-12, as the team gears up for Seoul.
While at Potsdam, Lee compiled 41 goals and 74 assists for 115 points in four seasons as a defenseman and a forward for the Bears. He ranks 10th on the program’s all-time scoring list and became Potsdam’s fifth hockey All-American after the 2003-04 season. He was inducted into the SUNY Potsdam Athletics Hall of Fame in 2013.
