Dutchwomen Lose In OT To Quinnipiac

HAMDEN, Conn. – In a hard fought battle against ECAC opponent, Quinnipiac, the Dutchwomen fell in overtime, 4-3.

Dutchwoman Sierra Lee would start the offense for the evening, as she would score in the 11th minute of play. Coming off a smooth pass from fellow classmate, Helen Markovic, Lee would take a beautiful shot that found its way to the back of the net. Despite being out-shot 16 to three in the first period, Lee’s goal gave Union the 1-0 advantage heading into the second.

Quinnipiac responded halfway through the second period when Bobcat Melissa Samoskevich notched her second goal of the year to settle the score at one a piece. With five seconds left in the period, Katelynn Russ snapped off a quick wrist shot and got it past Quinnipiac’s goalie, Abbie Ives.

With the 2-1 advantage heading into the third period, the Bobcats struck again six minutes in. The Dutchwomen kicked things into high gear after the equalizer, as they began to fly around the ice. Less than four minutes after Samoskevich’s goal, Lee would also score again to give Union the 3-2 advantage.

Quinnipiac would empty the net at about the 2:30 mark. The Dutchwomen would hold off the Bobcats as time ticked down, but with two seconds left in the game, Quinnipiac found a way to score and put the game into overtime.

The Bobcats would score in the first minute of overtime to seal the victory, 4-3.

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE:
-Lee’s two goals tonight were the first of her career as a Dutchwomen.
-Russ’ second period goal was her team-leading fifth goal of the season. With that goal, scored in Union’s 11th game of the year, the sophomore became the fastest Dutchwoman to reach the five-goal mark in a single season, since Elise Nichols tallied her fifth goal in the team’s seventh contest of the 2006-2007 season.
-First years, Hannah Schultz, Megan Ryan and Markovic all had one assist on the night.
-Brandy Streeter, Rachel de Perio and Cheyenne Harris also had assists. Harris and de Perio lead the team in assists with seven and five assists, respectively.
-The Bobcat’s captain, Samoskevich, scored Quinnipiac’s game winner and had a hat trick.
-Quinnipiac out shot Union, 52-12
