SYRACUSE, N.Y. – Senior captain Stephanie Grossi notched three points as the Syracuse ice hockey team (2-7-1, 1-0-0) downed Penn State (2-7-4, 0-2-3), 3-0, Friday night at Tennity Ice Pavilion. This was the first conference win of the season for the Orange.
“I think the kids were energized and there were two huge points on the line,” said head coach Paul Flanagan. “I thought Penn State responded pretty well in the second period and really made us earn it.”
HOW IT WAS DECIDED
Grossi set the tone early for the Orange, recording her first goal of the game just 44 seconds into the contest. The senior followed up with her second goal just six minutes later, taking a pass from junior Allie Munroe and burying it top shelf to make it 2-0, Syracuse, heading into the first intermission.
The Orange defense kept the shutout rolling as the penalty kick unit was perfect in the game, killing off eight power play opportunities for Penn State. Senior Abbey Miller tallied 14 saves in goal for Syracuse, for her program-leading 11th shutout victory.
Defenseman Megan Quinn capped the night for the Orange with her first goal of the season, just over halfway through the third period. Grossi notched her third point of the night with an assist on the Quinn goal.
OF NOTE
Grossi eclipsed the 100-point mark with her three points against Penn State. She sits at 101 career points, 11 points behind program-leader Melissa Piacentini. The senior moved into third for career goals (40) and took over the top spot for career assists (60).
Senior Alysha Burriss recorded a pair of assists against Penn State for the third multi-assist game of her career. She paces the Orange with five assists on the year.
