SYRACUSE, N.Y. – The Syracuse ice hockey team (4-7-2, 3-0-1) notched its first series sweep of the season after defeating RIT (4-9-1, 1-5-0), 5-1, Saturday night at Tennity Ice Pavilion. Redshirt junior Brooke Avery tallied her first career two-goal game with a score in both the first and second periods.
HOW IT WAS DECIDED
Avery’s two goals, both even-strength scores, gave the Orange a 2-0 lead heading into the final frame of play.
At 4:02 in the third, Syracuse drew a penalty on a holding call and went on the power play. Just before time expired on the man-advantage, freshman Emma Polaski put the puck past the RIT goalie for her second career goal. Sophomore Kelli Rowswell put the Orange up 4-0 with her fifth goal of the season, just 24 seconds after the Polaski score.
RIT jumped on the scoring train with their only goal of the game, a shot off the stick of Brooke Baker, 16 seconds after the Rowswell goal. With less than four minutes left in the contest, senior Alysha Burriss capped the night for the Orange with her first goal of the season.
OF NOTE
In addition to her goal in the third period, Rowswell tallied a pair of assists on the Avery goals for her first career three-point game. This was also the first time that she has recorded two assists in a game in her collegiate career.
Senior goalie Abbey Miller posted her second consecutive one-goal game, tallying 15 saves in the outing. She came up big for the Orange, stopping a penalty shot awarded to RIT in the first period. The last penalty shot saved by Syracuse came when Miller was in net against Mercyhurst on Nov. 12 of last season.
Redshirt sophomore Lindsay Eastwood tallied an assist on three of the five goals scored for the Orange for her first career three-assist game.
