SCHENECTADY, NY – After a last minute goal from the Black Bears, the Union College women’s hockey team ended up tying against the University of Maine this evening, 3-3.
The Black Bears came out aggressively in the first period, notching their first goal of the evening just three minutes into the game. Maine gained possession of the puck and Lydia Murray would make a clean pass to Vendula Pribylova to net the puck. The goal was Pribyvola’s fifth of the year. Maine struck again at the 11 minute mark to bring Union to a quick 2-0 deficit. With nine minutes to go, the Dutchwomen responded. Jordi Naidrich won a battle off the boards and earned her first goal of her sophomore campaign, unassisted. Union would head into the second period trailing just 2-1.
With 8:48 to go in the second, Union went up on the power play. Maine managed to kill the penalty, but the Dutchwomen held on to the majority of the momentum in the latter half of the second period. Union earned another power play with five minutes to go and senior Katie Laughlin would score 20 seconds into the advantage, after she knocked in Arianna Kosakowski’s deflected shot. The Dutchwomen ended the second period tied at two goals apiece.
In the third period, Union went man down on a hooking penalty, but managed to kill it thanks to incredible defense from the Dutch. Maine took control for most of the third, but with nine minutes to go, Helen Markovic would connect with Haley Shugart on a beautiful combination. Shugart’s shot was drilled in the upper corner of the net and gave Union its first lead of the night.
Maine’s Tereza Vanisova would score her second goal of the night, with 1:05 left to go, and would ultimately send the game into overtime.
The Dutchwomen started the overtime period with a man-up advantage due to a checking penalty, but were unable to capitalize. The game would end in a draw, 3-3.
Union returns to action tomorrow afternoon to complete the weekend series against the Black Bears. Puck drop is at 3 p.m.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE:
-Naidrich’s goal brought Union’s sophomore class to collecting 23 of Union’s total 57 points.
-Laughlin’s goal was her second of the year and fourth of her career.
-Kosakowski and Caitlyn McLaren each had an assist on Laughlin’s goal. Kosakowski and McLaren now have four and three assists on the year, respectively.
-Markovic’s assist was her fourth of the year, the most of any Union first years.
-At the end of regulation, Maine led Union in shots on goal, 35-29.
