RPI Women’s Hockey Defeats Mercyhurst

ERIE, Pa. – Junior Jaimie Grigsby recorded a goal and an assist to lead the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) women’s hockey team to a 4-3 victory over Mercyhurst University, on Saturday afternoon at the Mercyhurst Ice Center. With the win, the Engineers improve to 5-7-4), while the Lakers drop to 3-9-2.

Mercyhurst trailed 4-1 halfway through the second period before scoring twice to pull within one with 13:12 to play. The Lakers had a few chances late in the third but couldn’t convert despite outshooting RPI 19-10 in the third and 40-33 for the game.

Blake Orosz netted the game’s first goal at 4:11 of the first period, but Lakers’ forward Céline Frappier scored her first of the season at 5:10 in the first period to tie the game at one.

RPI rattled off three-straight goals – by Madeleine Burnett, Makenna Thomas and Grigsby – to lead 4-1 midway through the second. Samantha Fieseler pulled the Lakers within two on her second of the season at 15:14.

Sam Isbell kept the Laker momentum going in the third period at 6:48 to cut RPI’s lead to one. Isbell extended her point streak to three games with the goal.

The Engineers are back on the ice next weekend, when they visit Brown and Yale on Friday (6pm) and Saturday (3pm), respectively.
