SCHENECTADY, NY – After a stalemate of a matchup, UMaine would eventually break through Union’s incredible defensive efforts to defeat the Dutchwomen 2-1.
The Black Bears came out explosive from the start, and would take only six minutes to bust open and score. Maine’s Daria Tereshkina netted her second goal of the season when she deflected a teammate’s shot from the point, to the back of the net.
Maine turned up the heat in the second period and would out shoot the Dutchwomen 16-7. The Black Bears controlled much of the momentum too, but Union’s defense stepped up and despite many close chances, the Dutchwomen did not let up a goal.
Five minutes into the final period, Union earned a power play and took full advantage of the opportunity. After passing the puck across the ice, Caitlyn McLaren took a shot that fumbled against one of Maine’s skaters. McLaren managed to recover the loose puck and take another shot that would eventually slip through Maine’s defense. First year Hannah Schultz earned her sixth point of the season with the assist on McLaren’s goal.
Union kept the game tied at 1-1 for 11 minutes. Just at the three-minute mark, Maine closed in on Union and netted the game winner. Catherine Tufts scored the goal from Tereza Vanisova, who had her 19th assist of the year.
Union was out shot by Maine, 41-19, and would ultimately fall 2-1 to the Black Bears.
The Dutchwomen return to action next Friday night, Dec. 1 to take on Yale University at 6 p.m. (ET).
