ROCHESTER, N.Y. — Freshman goaltender Gennaro Anzevino ’21 of the Elmira College men’s ice hockey team was selected as the United Collegiate Hockey Conference (UCHC) Goalie of the Week, as announced by the league office this morning. This recognition marks the second time this month that the South Hackensack, New Jersey, native has received weekly accolades from the conference.
Anzevino made one start this past week and it was a challenging one, as he was tasked with trying to stop No. 4/4 nationally-ranked SUNY Geneseo. The rookie held his own against the tough Knights, limiting the top-scoring team in the State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) to just two goals in EC’s thrilling 3-2 upset victory.
On the evening, Anzevino made 43 saves, 17 of which came in the third period. Anzevino’s performance in the final period was critical to EC’s win, as he held Geneseo scoreless, which allowed Elmira to complete its comeback. The 5-foot-9-inch goaltender’s 43 stops are a new career high and it marked his second 40-save game of the season. With the win, Anzevino’s record on the year stands at 2-1-1, his other victory coming in a 5-1 defeat of No. 7/11 nationally-ranked Utica College on November 11. Following his impressive performance against the Pioneers, Anzevino received UCHC Rookie of the Week accolades.
Anzevino’s strong effort also helped the Soaring Eagles continue their impressive play against nationally-ranked opposition. In four games against ranked foes, Elmira is 3-1-0, with two of those victories coming on home ice at the Murray Athletic Center.
The Soaring Eagles return to action this weekend with a pair of crucial UCHC bouts at the MAC. EC begins the weekend on Friday, December 1, with a 7:00 p.m. tilt against Chatham University, before concluding the duo of games on Saturday, December 2, with a 7:00 p.m. showdown against Lebanon Valley College.
