GENEVA, N.Y. – Julia Ming and Stephanie Hampton each scored a pair of goals as the William Smith women’s ice hockey team stayed unbeaten with a 6-2 non-conference win versus Cortland Friday night. The Red Dragons fell to 2-7-2, while the Herons improved to 7-0-2.
Sophomores Emily King (Buffalo/Buffalo Regals) and Carly Weigold (Mahopac/Millbrook Mustangs) netted goals for Cortland. Sophomore Miranda Kolb (Watertown/Syracuse Nationals) and freshman Kirsten MacDowell (Ottsville, PA/New Jersey Rockets) each collected an assist. Sophomore goalie Rachael Farmer (Grand Island/Niagara Jr. Purple Eagles) registered 22 saves.
Jordan Roetzer and Kiley Fewster added goals for William Smith. Maura Mulligan recorded two assists, and seven others each contributed one assist. Goalie Maggie Salmon turned aside 23 shots.
The Herons built a 3-0 lead after the first period of play as Mings scored twice and Hampton netted a power-play goal. Hampton’s second goal with the skater advantage made it a 4-0 score before King notched her third goal of the season at 16:44 of the second.
Fewster’s goal early in the third period pushed the lead to 5-1. Weigold’s power-play goal at the midway point cut Cortland’s deficit to 5-2. Roetzer concluded the scoring with 12 seconds on the clock for the 6-2 final.
