Cortland Score Four Straight To Defeat Potsdam

POTSDAM, N.Y. – Trailing early in the game, the Cortland men’s ice hockey team scored four straight goals and went on to defeat Potsdam, 4-2, in SUNYAC action on Saturday night. The Red Dragons closed out the first half of their season 5-8 overall and 3-6 in the conference. The Bears fell to 7-4-1 and 3-4 with the loss.

Senior Tommy Nolan (Mahopac/Connecticut Oilers) led four Cortland goal scorers with a goal and an assist. Senior Paul Fregeau (Los Angeles, CA/Des Moines Buccaneers), junior Mike Crowley (Buffalo/Springfield Blues) and freshman Scott Donahue (Commack/Boston Bandits) each netted a goal. Sophomore Sean Perichak (Oakville, ON/Markham Royals) and freshmen Michael Faliero (West Seneca/Buffalo Jr. Sabres) and Alex Storjohann (Anthem, AZ/Kirkland Lake) chipped in with one assist. Senior goalie Drew Weigman (Annapolis, MD/Northern Cyclones) registered 40 saves.

Jacob Juron and Kyle Thacker each scored for Potsdam. Brett Horn, Jon Venter, Joey Gilhooly and Mike Sweeney picked up one assist apiece. Goalie Brendan McMenimen made 28 saves.

After Juron gave the Bears a 1-0 lead 2:52 into the first period, the Red Dragons closed the opening 20 minutes with three straight scores in the final 5:30 of the period. Crowley, Donahue and Nolan netted goals for Cortland.

Fregeau gave the Red Dragons a 4-1 lead at 16:40 of the second period before Thacker netted a power-play goal 21 seconds before the end of the period to pull the Bears to within 4-2, Potsdam had three power-play opportunities in the third period and pulled McMenimen late for an extra skater but could not beat Weigman.
