HENNIKER, N.H.—The SUNY Potsdam women’s hockey team (6-4-1) got an 18-save shutout from sophomore goaltender Alexa Pfeiffer(Sylvania, Ohio/Little Caesar’s) and goals from three different players in a 3-0 whitewashing of New England College (1-9-1) on Saturday afternoon. Sophomore forward Lucy Condon (Kitchener, Ontario/Waterloo Ravens), freshman forward Natalie Wasielewski (Carnegie, Pa./Pittsburgh Penguin Elite) and junior forward Jenna Patterson (Boissevain, Manatoba/Westman Wildcats) each scored for the Bears.
Potsdam claimed the momentum from the drop of the puck. The Bears fired seven shots on Pilgrims goalie Jackie Clark before NEC was able to manage one of its own. Despite good pressure and an 11-4 advantage in shots, Potsdam entered the first intermission still scoreless with the Pilgrims.
Condon gave the Bears all the offense they’d need 5:20 into the second period. With the puck in front of the net, she drew Clark out of position and then deposited it into the back of the net for the eventual game-winner. Senior forward Jaci Morr (Monroe, Mich./Team Detroit) assisted on the goal. Just 37 seconds later, Condon fed Wasielewski on a two-on-one and the freshman made it 2-0. The shot differential was 14-6 in the middle 20 minutes and Potsdam took the two-goal lead into the second break.
The third period was more closely contested, but NEC’s luck didn’t change. Potsdam was called for high-sticking at the 12:32 mark and the Pilgrims went on their first power play of the contest. After a turnover on the man advantage, Patterson went the length of the ice and put the contest out of reach. The Bears killed off two final penalties and Pfeiffer slammed the door with eight saves in the period.
Clark finished with 33 saves. The Bears outshot NEC 36-18 and were 0-for-4 on the power play and the Pilgrims were 0-for-3.
Potsdam wraps up the semester with a 5 p.m. contest in Worcester, Mass. tomorrow when the Bears face the Becker College Hawks.
