NEW LONDON, CONN.-Ninth-ranked Connecticut College scored twice in the third period to pull away from William Smith 4-0 in non-conference action at Dayton Arena this afternoon. Senior Maggie Salmon made a season-high 39 saves in 52:18 of action.
Mairi Anthony scored twice for Connecticut College (6-2-1) while Erin Dillon had a goal and an assist. Bailey Mertz made 13 saves as she collected her second straight shutout.
Connecticut College (6-2-1) opened the scoring at the 2:21 mark of the first period when Kate Kohl scored her second goal of the season. She collected her own rebound and slid the puck between Salmon’s legs.
The Herons nearly tied the game a minute later but sophomore Gina Scibetta’s shot was turned aside by Mertz.
Anthony doubled Connecticut College’s lead 4:44 into the second period off a cross ice pass from Dillon. Anthony fired a one-timer past Salmon’s blocker for her first goal of the season.
In the closing minutes of the period, Scibetta and Stephanie Hampton had point blank opportunities robbed by Mertz in quick succession.
The Camels added two goals in the third period goals to secure the victory. Anthony stuffed home a rebound for her second goal of the game. Four minutes later Dillon scored a backhanded power-play goal to close out the scoring.
Scibetta had another golden scoring opportunity in the third period but fired her shot from the slo over the cross bar.
Senior Emily Spencer stopped two shots in the final 4:30 of the third period. The Herons blocked an additional 23 shots in the game.
William Smith finished the game 0-for-3 on the power play, while the Camels were 1-for7 with the extra attacker.
The Herons complete the 2017 portion of their schedule with a 7-2-2 overall record. William Smith will be back at The Cooler next weekend Jan. 5-6 when it hosts UMass Boston for a pair of non-conference games.
