MOON TOWNSHIP, Pa. – The Syracuse ice hockey team (5-12-2, 4-4-1) came up short, 5-2, at conference foe, No. 9 Robert Morris (12-3-3, 6-1-2), Friday night at the Island Sports Center. Senior Alysha Burriss tallied both goals for the Orange for her first two-score outing of the season.
HOW IT WAS DECIDED
It was a relatively quiet first period as the teams traded shots to no avail. The Orange penalty kill got to work with just under eight minutes to go in the period, keeping the score knotted at zero heading into the first intermission.
The Colonials came out dominant in the second period, notching a pair of goals in the first three minutes of play. Burriss responded for the Orange picking up the puck from defenseman Lindsay Eastwood and burying it five-hole on the breakaway opportunity. The Colonials added a goal at the end of the period to take a 3-1 lead into the final 20 minutes of action.
Robert Morris extended their lead to 4-1 with a goal five minutes into the frame but Burriss picked up a rebound and blasted the puck into the back of the net just 45 seconds later to cut the lead to two. An empty net goal for the Colonials late in the third closed out the game at 5-2.
OF NOTE
Burriss’ two scores in the game were her second and third goals of the season. She is just the third Orange this season to record a pair of goals in an outing with the others coming from fellow senior Stephanie Grossi (Nov. 10) and redshirt junior Brooke Avery (Nov. 18).
Eastwood snagged her team-leading ninth assist of the season, while sophomore Kelli Rowswell brought her season point total to 12 with an assist on the second Burriss goal.
