POTSDAM, N.Y.—The SUNY Potsdam men’s hockey team will hold its second annual DHC Night in the Fight Against Cancer on Saturday, January 27, when the Bears host the College at Brockport.

Nearly everyone has been touched by this terrible disease in some way and athletic programs are no different. The men’s hockey team lost one of its own when Anthony Proteau succumbed to cancer on April 3, 2010. Current Bears assistant captain Sean Kacerosky (Kendall Park, N.J./New York Bobcats) was able to defeat the disease after early detection nearly two years ago. Right now, SUNY Potsdam assistant athletic trainer Alex Berking is fighting brain cancer after being diagnosed in November.

The goal of the event is to recognize all of those affected by the disease by demonstrating support for those fighting and honoring those lost. The tag DHC derives from Bears head coach Chris Bernard’s father-in-law Darrell Hampton, who lost his battle with cancer several years ago. The team now uses his initials to stand for Determination, Humor and Courage, key characteristics everyone needs when battling the disease personally or with family and friends.

The American Cancer Society will be at Maxcy Ice Arena during the contest to accept donations from attendees. Any fans making a donation will receive a DHC Potsdam Hockey t-shirt. There will also be a silent auction for Bears team apparel and memorabilia with all proceeds going to the ACS.

The Bears will square off with the Golden Eagles at 7 p.m. that evening as they continue their playoff hunt.
