ALBANY, N.Y. – Colgate men’s ice hockey sophomore goaltender Colton Point (North Bay, Ontario) was named to the All-ECAC Hockey Second Team and freshman defenseman Nick Austin (St. Louis Park, Minnesota) was named to the Rookie Team, as announced by the league office Tuesday afternoon.
The Raiders have had at least one player receive all-league recognition in seven straight seasons with Point and Austin’s honors Tuesday.
Point is Colgate’s first second team all-league player since Chris Wagner in 2012 while Austin is Colgate’s first all-rookie team player since Charlie Finn ’17 in 2014.
Among his accolades this season, Point was named a finalist for the ECAC Hockey Player and Goaltender of the Year Awards as well as a semifinalist for the Mike Richter Award, which is presented to the nation’s most outstanding goaltender. During the season, Point was a three-time ECAC Hockey Goaltender of the Week winner and was the goaltender of the month in October.
Austin is a two-time ECAC Hockey Rookie of the Week winner and was also named the rookie of the month in October.
Point led ECAC Hockey with a .954 save percentage in league play, besting Cornell’s Matthew Galajda’s .948 save percentage. Point was also second in the league with a 1.52 GAA and four shutouts. He totaled 540 saves in 17 conference games, an average of 31.76 saves per game that ranked second in the league.
Overall this season, Point finished second in the nation with a .944 save percentage and 1.74 GAA. He ranked fourth with six shutouts. His save percentage is tied for the 10th best in NCAA history.
Point’s .944 save percentage and 1.74 GAA shattered program records. He bested the program’s 55-year old record for save percentage in a single season of .930 set by Kurt Brown while he beat Steve Silverthorn’s 1.82 GAA from the 2003-04 season. Point also tied the program record for shutouts in a season of six held by Mark Dekanich ’08 and Charlie Finn ’17.
Austin finished league play with three goals and eight assist for 11 points. He recorded the third-most points among ECAC Hockey freshmen defensemen. He also had a goal and four assists for five points on the power play while defensively he managed to block 21 shots.
Overall, Austin led all Colgate rookie and was tied for the ECAC Hockey rookie defensemen lead with six goals and 18 points. He blocked 37 shots on defense for Colgate while on the power play he had two goals and seven assists for nine points.
Austin’s 18 points are the most by a Colgate freshman defenseman since Spiro Goulakos ’15 had 19 points during the 2011-12 season. Austin’s six goals are the most by a rookie defenseman since Jeremy Price ’13 had six goals in the 2009-10 season.
