Latham, NY- The New York State Public High School Athletic Association (NYSPHSAA) is holding its annual summer meeting of the Central Committee on July 24-25 in Lake Placid, NY. The primary focus of the meeting is to vote on proposals, listen to discussion items pertaining to interscholastic athletics and to afford superintendents, principals, athletic representatives, and section executive directors to meet in small groups.
The Central Committee approved permanently moving the boys and girls bowling state championships from week 35 to week 36 of the standard NYSPHSAA calendar. It was also approved to expand the bowling championships from a two-day tournament to a three-day tournament beginning in 2019. The 2019 bowling championships will take place March 8-10, 2019 at the AMF Strike-N-Spare in Syracuse. Amendments to the bowling substitution rule were additionally approved for the state tournament as well as revisions to the maximum contest rule.
The sport of outdoor track and field had their proposal for a new super qualifying standard approved for the spring 2019 season. Boys ice hockey had its proposal for a six-year regional rotation beginning in the winter of 2019 approved. The Committee also approved the use of video replay in all post season boys ice hockey games when available. Replay can be used to determine goals, undetermined goals and determining correct time on the game clock.
The Committee approved moving the 2019 softball championships from week 49 of the standard calendar to week 50. The softball championships will now take place on Saturday June 15.
The Central Committee meeting continues Wednesday, July 25 and concludes with the 2018 NYSPHSAA Hall of Fame Banquet Wednesday evening.
