Powell and Lahey Collect Elmira College Athlete of the Week Awards

ELMIRA, N.Y. — After sweeping a weekend of United Collegiate Hockey Conference (UCHC) action, Connor Powell ’20 of the men’s ice hockey team and Meg Lahey ’19 of the nationally-ranked women’s ice hockey team were named Elmira College Athletes of the Week.

Powell extended his season-opening point streak to five consecutive games with a season-high three points in wins over both King’s College (Pa.) and Wilkes University at the Murray Athletic Center. In the two games combined, the junior forward recorded three goals, two of which were scored on the power play, in addition to three assists.

In a 7-3 triumph over the Monarchs on Friday night, the Merrimack, New Hampshire, native deposited a pair of goals with one helper. Both goals were tallied on special teams, as he put EC on the board in the first period with a shorthanded score, followed by a power-play goal early in the third to double-up the Monarchs, 6-3. On Saturday, Powell was vital in Elmira’s 5-2 victory over the Colonels by burying the eventual game-winner on the power play, while doling out a pair of assists to linemates Nick Ford ’20 and Matthew Cuce ’20.

Following his productive weekend, Powell is tied for first in the nation with 10 points (6g-4a) and second in power-play goals (3).

Powell and the EC men’s ice hockey team will look to extend their three-game win streak on Friday, November 9, when the Purple and Gold travel to Aston, Pennsylvania, to face Neumann University in UCHC play at 7:00 p.m.

Lahey and the No. 1/1-ranked women’s ice hockey team recently returned from Aston following a pair of road victories over the Knights. The Soaring Eagles outscored the hosts from Neumann by a combined margin of 9-to-2, with Lahey earning a trio of assists in addition to her duties on the blue line.

With the EC defense limiting the Knights to just one goal in each contest, Lahey helped the Soaring Eagles lower their goals-against average to a mere 1.33. She also played a key role in holding Neumann to just one power-play goal in eight tries. On the other end of the ice, Lahey logged two primary assists on power-play goals in the series opener, a 7-1 win on Friday night, before securing her team-leading fourth assist of the season on the game-winning goal in Saturday’s 2-1 victory.

Through the first three games of the 2018-19 campaign, the senior captain from Latham, New York, is tied for the team lead in points (4). Within the UCHC, she’s tied for third in power-play points (3) and fifth in assists (4).

Lahey and the No. 1/1 Soaring Eagles return home for a two-game conference set against Lebanon Valley College this weekend. Elmira begins the series on Friday, November 9, with a 7:00 p.m. opening puck drop scheduled at the Murray Athletic Center.
