WINTHROP, Mass. – Niagara junior Noah Delmas has been named Atlantic Hockey’s Defensive Player of the Week, while freshman forward Ludwig Stenlund has been named the conference’s Player of the Week, as announced on Tuesday.
Delmas posted five points (2 G, 3 A) for the second consecutive series. Delmas got an assist and a goal in the opening 3:02 of the team’s matchup at Canisius on November 15, then followed it up with a goal and two assists at home against the Golden Griffins on November 17. Two of his five points came on the power play to help the Purple Eagles go 4-12 (.250) with the man advantage. Entering the series, Niagara had been 3-42 (.071) all season when on the power play.
The Schomberg, Ont. native currently leads the team in points with 12 (4 G, 8 A). 10 of those points (3 G, 7 A) have come in the team’s last four games, a stretch that has seen Niagara go 3-0-1 to earn the top spot in the Atlantic Hockey standings. Delmas now has four straight games with at least two points, the longest such stretch of his collegiate career.
Stenlund registered six points (3 G, 3 A) in the sweep over the Golden Griffins. In Thursday’s 5-2 victory, the rookie provided the lone assist on Dylan Mills’ second period goal that proved to be the game-winner. In the third period, he scored to extend Niagara’s lead to 4-2 and put the game out of reach. Two nights later, the rookie outdid himself yet again. 55 seconds after Canisius tied the game at 2-2, Stenlund put the Purple Eagles ahead with the first of his two second period goals. He later added two assists en route to a 9-6 win. Stenlund also had a hand in three (2 G, 1 A) of the team’s four power play goals on the weekend.
The native of Skellefteå, Sweden has recorded eight (4 G, 4 A) of his 10 points this season at Dwyer Arena. Saturday was also his second multi-point home game of the year after notching two goals in his collegiate debut against AIC on October 12.
Earlier on Tuesday, Stenlund was named the Third Star of the Week by the NCAA for his six-point performance.
The Purple Eagles (6-5-1, 6-3-1 AHA) are back on the road this weekend to take on the Army Black Knights. Puck drop for Friday, Nov. 23 will be at 7 p.m., while Saturday’s game will get under way at 4 p.m.
