Canisius goaltenders Blake Weyrick and Matt Ladd were both recognized as the Atlantic Hockey Association handed out its Team Travel USA weekly awards on Tuesday.
Weyrick, a junior from Los Angeles, Calif., was named the league’s goaltender of the week for the second consecutive week.
Ladd, a freshman from nearby Getzville, N.Y., took home the circuit’s rookie of the week award for the first time in just his second week with the team after joining the program at the semester break.
Together, the duo combined to stop 80-of-82 shots faced as they helped guide the Golden Griffins to a sweep of No. 13 North Dakota last weekend at Harborcenter.
In the series opener, Weyrick made 32 saves in Canisius’ posted a 3-1 triumph over the Fighting Hawks. He stopped all 17 shots he faced in the third period as North Dakota pushed for the equalizer during the final frame. Weyrick also turned aside all 13 attempts he saw while the Fighting Hawks were on the power play, keeping them off the scoreboard during their five opportunities with the man advantage.
Ladd got the start in the series finale and was equally impressive, turning aside 48 attempts in a 2-1 victory. He made 22 saves during the first period as North Dakota posted a 23-2 shot advantage. Following a man-advantage tally by the Fighting Hawks late in the first, Ladd was up to the task, stopping all 32 shots he faced the rest of the way to record his first collegiate victory.
Canisius (8-9-2, 5-7-1 AHA) returns to action this weekend when it faces long-time rival Mercyhurst in a home-and-home series. The Griffs and Lakers begin the weekend set Jan. 11 with a 7:35 p.m. contest at Harborcenter.
