William Smith College first-year Abbey Luth was named the United College Hockey Conference’s Rookie of the Year in a vote of the conference coaches. In addition, six Herons earned a spot on the all-conference teams as announced today.
Junior forward Gina Scibetta and sophomore forward Jules Kennedy earned a spot on the second team. Luth was named to the all-rookie team. Senior defender Laura Rollins, sophomore defender Emily Martino, and sophomore Olivia Williams garnered honorable mention honors.
Luth put together a strong rookie season, shattering William Smith’s rookie records for goals, assists and points in a season. Through 26 games, she has 18 goals and 13 assists for 31 points. Krista Federow ’18 held the previous record with 11 goals, eight assists and 19 points during the 2014-15 season. Luth is second on the team in goals and third in points. She has 10 multi-point games, including a season-high five points against King’s on Jan. 13. She had a goal and four assists in that game. Luth recorded the first hat trick in program history in a 5-1 victory over Lebanon Valley on Nov. 17. She added a hat trick in a win over Manhattanville on Jan. 20. She recorded a goal in William Smith’s UCHC Tournament opening round victory over Neumann last Saturday. Luth is currently fifth in the conference in goals, seventh in points and third in rookie scoring. Luth was named the UCHC Player of the Week once and to the D3hockey.com National Team of the Week once.
In UCHC games, Luth compiled 27 points on 15 goals and 12 assists. In those games, she was second among rookies in points per game (1.50) and led all first-years with 15 goals.
Scibetta had a career-high 22 goals, 17 assists and 39 points this season to lead William Smith. She is the Herons’ first 20-goal scorer and broke William Smith’s single-season mark for goals and points. Federow held the previous record at 12 goals and 34 points. Scibetta had 11 multi-point games this season. She recorded a career-high four points in wins over Salve Regina and King’s. Scibetta notched her first career hat trick against the Monarchs. In William Smith’s playoff win over Neumann, she had a pair of goals and an assist. She is second in the conference in goals, points, and ninth in assists. Scibetta was named to the D3hockey.com National Team of the Week once.
In 77 career games, Scibetta has compiled 36 goals and 37 assists for 73 points. She is second on William Smith’s all-time list in goals, third in points, and fourth in assists.
Through 26 games, Kennedy is second on the team with 19 assists and 36 points. She is third in goals with 17 goals. Kennedy posted a career-high five points on two goals and three assists in William Smith’s victory over King’s. She had 12 multi-point games, including a three-point game in William Smith’s 6-0 win over Neumann in the opening round of the UCHC Tournament.
Kennedy has played in 52 career games. She has 22 goals and 27 assists for 49 points. She is sixth on William Smith’s all-time list in points.
A captain, Rollins had a career-high 14 assists and 16 points this season. She matched her career high with two goals. Rollins had a season-high two points three times this season. She had two assists in regular season wins over Neumann and King’s. Rollins added a career-high 36 blocked shots this season. She blocked seven in a 6-4 victory over Buffalo State. Rollins played an important role in William Smith’s penalty kill unit that finished second in the conference operating at a 90.4 percent success rate.
In 102 career games, Rollins has six goals, 33 assists and 39 points. She is fifth on William Smith’s all-time assists list and ninth on the points list.
Martino led William Smith defenders with 20 points on five goals and 15 assists. A solid puck moving defender, she recorded five multi-point games. Martino had two assists three times this season. She was tied for fourth in the conference in points by a defender, averaging 0.77 points per game. Martino compiled 31 blocked shots.
Martino has played in 52 career games, recording nine goals and 25 assists for 34 points. She was an All-Rookie team selection last season.
Williams has started in 21 of the 22 games she has seen action in this season. She is 13-7-2 overall with a .925 save percentage and a 1.98 goals against average. Williams has compiled a Heron single-season record five shutouts this season. She made a career-high 43 saves in a 6-3 win at Manhattanville on Jan. 20. Williams’ 13 wins this season match the Herons’ single-season wins record set by Maggie Salmon ’18 last season.
Williams has seen action in 26 games in her career. She is 16-8-2 with a 1.84 GAA and a .929 save percentage. Williams has seven career shutouts, which is tied for first on the Herons’ all-time list.
William Smith will be back in action on Saturday, March 2, when it travels to Pine Valley, N.Y., for a UCHC semifinal contest. The Herons will take on Nazareth at Elmira’s Murray Athletic Center at 7 p.m. The winner will advance to Sunday’s championship match.
