There was much debate about whether Jack Hughes or Kaapo Kakko should be the first overall selection in the 2019 NHL Entry Draft, so the New York Rangers are more than satisfied that the 6’2”, 190 lb. right wing was “left” to them second overall.

The Turku native set a new record for goals scored by an under-18 player in Liiga beating Alexander Barkov’s previous mark, so he is already among some good company.

And he has performed well on the big stage as he scored the overtime winner this past January to lead Team Finland to the Under-20 World Championship.

“I was a little bit nervous before this, but now I am so excited, Kakko said after his selection. “It was my dream to be the number one (pick), but…I am happy.

“I hope I can play in the NHL next season. I think I have to be stronger and a better skater…but I will work this summer.”

Kakko has never been to New York City and he showed his sense of humor when asked what he expects. “I think it’s a little bit bigger than Turku.”

The Rangers can only hope that Kakko has the same impact that the last Finnish player to be selected second over—Patrick Laine of Winnipeg.

When asked if he was looking forward to proving the New Jersey Devils made the wrong choice (taking Jack Hughes first instead), the youngster replied, “yeah.” Guess he has never heard of bulletin board material in Finland.
