Three Former RIT Men’s Hockey Standouts Attending NHL Training Camps

ROCHESTER, NY – Three former RIT men’s hockey standouts Chris Tanev (Vancouver Canucks), Matt Abt (Leduc, Alberta/Whitecourt Wolverines) (Pittsburgh Penguins) and Erik Brown (Keene, Ontario/Kemptville 73’s) (New York Islanders), will be at NHL preseason camps.

Tanev, who played for the Tigers in 2009-10, will begin his tenth season with the Vancouver Canucks and second as an assistant captain. Tanev helped lead RIT to the NCAA Division I Frozen Four in 2010, finishing with 28 points on 10 goals and 18 assists. He has played in 445 games in the NHL, including 55 last season finishing with 12 points on two goals and 10 assists.

Brown was invited to the New York Islanders camp. He led RIT with 18 goals and added 11 assists for 29 points on his way to earning All-AHA third team honors in 2018-19. He is the 11th player in RIT’s Division I history to reach 100 points in his career, and was also a 2018-19 Senior CLASS Award Second Team All-American. He set a Division I team single-season mark with 29 goals in 2017-18, and finished his four-year career with 70 goals. He finished his career at RIT seventh in the Division I era with 115 career points on 70 goals and 45 assists in 148 games.

Abt was invited to the Pittsburgh Penguins camp. He played in 139 games for RIT from 2014-18, finishing his career with 54 points on 14 goals and 40 assists, while racking up 210 minutes in penalties. Last season, Abt played in 63 games for the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins of the American Hockey League. He recorded 12 assists and 55 penalty minutes.
