GENESEO, N.Y. – The SUNY Geneseo men’s ice hockey team defeated visiting Oswego, 4-1, on Saturday night at Ira S. Wilson Arena to claim its third-consecutive State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) title.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Sophomore defenseman Matthew Doran gave the Knights an early 1-0 lead with a shot from the slot, but SUNY Oswego evened the score 1-1 at the 11:39 mark of the first period.
Halfway through the second period, senior defenseman Tanner Salsberry sent a perfect pass across the crease and Miller finished it from one knee. Senior forward David Szmyd tacked on a late goal before the period ended.
The Knights clung to their 3-1 lead as Oswego peppered junior goaltender Aaron Mackay with shots after pulling their goalie. Junior forward Carson Kelley scored a full-ice empty netter as time expired and Geneseo claimed a 4-1 championship victory.
FAST FACTS
Geneseo won their seventh conference championship and third in a row. It is only the second “three-peat” in conference history.
Mackay made 20 saves and secured his 13th win of the season as he was named SUNYAC Tournament MVP. Miller, Salsberry and senior forward Conlan Keenan were each named to the All-Tournament Team as well.
Senior forward Andrew Romano has an assist and leads the country in points with 56.
