Julia Gosling and Anna Segedi both scored two goals and added an assist to lead the Saints to a 4-1 win over Quinnipiac in an ECAC Hockey contest on Saturday afternoon in Hamden, Connecticut.
Gosling, who missed the Saints’ first three games of the season while attending the BFL Canada National Women’s Team Training Camp in Calgary, scored the game-winning goal to give the Saints a 2-1 lead late in the first period, then gave St. Lawrence a two-goal cushion at the 12:36 mark of the third period.
The win was the first of the season for the Saints (1-3-0 overall, 1-2-0 ECAC Hockey), who hadn’t played since January 24 due to COVID-19 protocols. Quinnipiac fell to 7-4-0, 1-4-0.
St. Lawrence was outshot 34-21, but the Saints made the most of their opportunities, and sophomore goaltender Lucy Morgan had another solid performance in goal with 33 saves.
“It was great to be back playing and to get a win on top of it,” said St. Lawrence head coach Chris Wells ’92 P’23. “We had some great efforts today, especially coming out of quarantine, by many of our players. Lucy was sharp in net again as Quinnipiac pressured us for long stretches throughout the game. We scored some timely goals off of breakouts. We will get some rest tonight and be back at it tomorrow.”
Segedi scored the first goal of the game on a power play halfway through the first period, as Shailynn Snow chopped at a loose puck behind the net and it came right to Segedi at the right post. Skylar Podvey also picked up the secondary assist on the play.
Taylor Girard tied the game for Quinnipiac, lifting a wrist shot top shelf from the right faceoff dot with 2:27 left in the first period.
Gosling, however, gave the Saints the lead going into the locker room for the first intermission, scoring on her own rebound with just 34.4 seconds left on the clock. Taylor Lum picked up her first collegiate point with an assist on the play, while Podvey got netter her second assist of the game.
The Saints spent several minutes pinned in their own defensive end halfway through the third period, including two minutes on the penalty kill. After they were finally able to get a whistle and a breather during a media timeout, and Segedi helped spring Gosling by contesting a puck on a faceoff in the Saints’ defensive zone, and Gosling was off to the races, getting a stride ahead of the Quinnipiac defenders and beating Bobcat goaltender Logan Angers five-hole for her second of the game.
Just 25 seconds later, Gosling caused a turnover in the Quinnipiac zone and the puck came right to Segedi, who fired a shot from the high slot that beat Angers and chased her from the game. Angers made 15 saves and allowed all four goals. Catie Boudiette stopped two shots over the final seven minutes.
The Saints were nearly perfect on special teams, going 1-for-2 on the power play and 4-for-4 on the penalty kill.
The two teams will meet in the second game of the three-game series on Sunday at 2 p.m.
