ROCHESTER, NY – The Utica Comets came back from a 2-1 deficit with a pair of goals late in the second period including the game-winner from below the goalline in a 3-2 victory over the Rochester Americans that extended their season-opening winning streak to 11 games tying the American Hockey league record set by the Amerks in 1984-85.
“We gave up 12 shots on goal tonight against the best team in the American Hockey League, so if we play that way over and over again, we will win a lot of games,” Rochester head coach Seth Appert said.
Rochester defenseman Ethan Prow celebrated his 29th birthday with the tying goal at 7:14 of the second period before Brett Murray redirected a Sean Malone pass for a power play marker at 10:46 to give Rochester a 2-1 lead. But Utica defenseman Reilly Walsh tied the game with a power play goal at 14:09 and Robbie Russo scored with a shot from below the goalline off the leg pad of the goaltender and in for what would prove to be the game-winner in the final minute of the second.
Rochester hosts Lehigh Valley Friday night before traveling to Utica for a rematch Saturday while the Comets host Charlotte Friday.
