SCHENECTADY, N.Y. – Following a 20-save shutout and a win for the Union College women’s hockey team over Franklin Pierce University on Friday evening, first-year goalie Sophie Matsoukas was named MAC Goalie of the Week, the conference announced.

Matsoukas made 20 saves in her first collegiate shutout, the first for the Dutchwomen since a 2-0 victory over Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute at the 2020 Mayor’s Cup. The 4-0 victory is the second-largest shutout win in the program’s Division I history, behind only a 6-0 win over Sacred Heart University on October 16, 2008.

Matsoukas is the second women’s hockey player for Union to win a weekly award this season. First-year Maren Friday was named a Rookie of the Week back on October 4th of this season. Matsoukas is the first Union netminder to win Goalie of the Week since Bella McKee earned the honor in October 2019.

The Dutchwomen will return from holiday break and travel to New Haven, Conn., to face off against Yale on January 7. Puck drop is scheduled for 6 p.m.
