SCHENECTADY, N.Y. – Following a month where first-year Sophie Matsoukas posted a 0.71 goals against average and a .978 save percentage as well as earning her first collegiate shutout and win for the Union College women’s hockey team. Matsoukas was named MAC Goaltending Goalie of the Month and Rookie of the Month, the league announced.
Matsoukas played in three games in the month of December and started in two of those games. Allowing 2 goals in those three games played, making 91 saves on 93 shots in the month of December. She earned her first collegiate win in a 2-1 win over Dartmouth on December 4th. She made 39 saves on 40 shots in the effort.
Matsoukas made 20 saves in her first collegiate shutout, the first for the Dutchwomen since a 2-0 victory over Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute at the 2020 Mayor’s Cup. The 4-0 victory is the second-largest shutout win in the program’s Division I history, behind only a 6-0 win over Sacred Heart University on October 16, 2008.
Matsoukas is the third Dutchwomen net minder to be named Goalie of the Month and the first to be the Rookie of the Month as well. Goaltender Melissa Black and Shenae Lundberg ’15 were the other players to be named a Goalie of the month. Matsoukas was also named MAC Goalie of the Week on December 14th.
The Dutchwomen will return from Holiday break and play host to Princeton on January 14th, at 6 p.m. at Messa Rink.
