Canisius junior goaltender Jacob Barczewski has been named to the “Watch List” for the 2022 Mike Richter Award, the Hockey Commissioners Association (HCA) announced on Thursday.

Given annually to the top goaltender in NCAA men’s Division I ice hockey, Barczewski is one of just three goaltenders from Atlantic Hockey on the initial list of 28 netminders. A committee of voters — made up of a cross section of coaches, administrators, scouts and media — will pare this list down to approximately 15 names within the next two weeks and then ultimately choose the winner, who will be announced in April during the NCAA Frozen Four. A similar award to recognize the top female goalie in the NCAA is also presented by the HCA.

A native of O’Fallon, Mo., Barczewski has started 19 games between the pipes for the Golden Griffins, compiling a 10-7-1 overall record along with a .926 save percentage and a 2.42 goals against average. A four-time Atlantic Hockey Goaltender of the Week selection, Barczewski has been even more impressive against league competition this season, fashioning a .930 save percentage and a 2.28 goals against average in 14 league games. The Atlantic Hockey Association goaltender of the Month for November has recorded 30 or more saves on seven occasions this season, including three 40-plus save performances.

Canisius (11-9-3, 8-6-2 AHA) begins a five-game homestand this weekend when it hosts Bentley in a two-game Atlantic Hockey Association series. Both games of the Jan. 21-22 series at LECOM Harborcenter are scheduled for 7 p.m. puck drops.
