SYRACUSE, N.Y. – Graduate student defenseman Erin McArdle (Macomb, Mich./Belle Tire) of the Plattsburgh State women’s ice hockey team has earned the Northeast Women’s Hockey League’s (NEWHL’s) Scholar-Athlete of the Year Award, as announced by the league office.
McArdle becomes the first NEWHL player to capture the award other than former Oswego defenseman Kate Randazzo, who claimed the honor from 2018-20 – the first three years the award was presented.
On the ice, McArdle’s accomplishments include a pair of CCM/American Hockey Coaches Association (AHCA) All-America honors, including first-team honors in 2022 and second-team recognition in 2020. She also is a three-time All-NEWHL selection, earning First-Team honors in 2022 and 2020 and Second-Team recognition in 2019. She set the career program record this season in points among defensemen with 95, and she has also blocked 105 shots, scored 17 goals and dished out 78 assists during her career. Among Division III leaders this year, she ranks 20th in assists (22) and 22nd in assists per game (0.79). McArdle has also scored four goals for 26 points on the year.
In the classroom, McArdle has earned a 3.76 GPA as a human development and family relations and psychology double major. She is a member of the Chi Alpha Sigma honor society, the nation’s only national scholar-athlete society which requires a 3.4 or higher cumulative GPA, and she is a four-time honoree on the State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) Commissioner’s Academic Honor Roll.
