The host Adirondack Region Women’s Ice Hockey Team took the gold medal in the 2013 Empire State Winter Games held in Lake Placid February 7-10. New York City took silver and the West brought home the Bronze.
Three games were on tap on Sunday beginning with Hudson Valley vs Long Island, which turned into a very unique situation.
After Long Island’s Danielle Glinski was injured, Hudson Valley’s goalie, Nancy Haggerty went in for her. Haggerty made 11 saves on 11 shots coming from her regular teammates. In the end Hudson Valley beat Long Island 6-3. Prior to Haggerty going into the net, Glinski had made 18 saves.
Sophia Kokkonis made 41 saves before Karen Evans went into the pipes and made 14 saves. Scoring a natural hat trick was Hudson Valley’s Jennifer Abramo. Other scoring came from Jamie Longo (2) and Abramo added a fourth goal to her stats.
Next up New York City’s Alisha Cattelan made 13 saves giving NYC a 2-0 shutout over Central. Central’s Lauren Dahm faced 53 shots. Rebecca Fisher scored both goals for New York.
In the final game of the day Adirondack took the West 5-2. West’s Ashley Schneegold made 45 saves with Katie Stack making both of the West’s goals, including one unassisted.
Scoring for Adirondack were Monique Rafferty, Christie Sharlow, Andrea Kilborne-Hill and Tara Akstull.
