Junior forward Michelle Alonardo scored a goal and added two assists to lead the No. 6/7 St. Lawrence University women’s hockey team to a 3-1 win over Concordia University in an exhibition game at Appleton Arena on Tuesday night.
Alonardo started the first scoring play of the game, picking up a loose puck in the neutral zone and skating up the right side. Concordia goaltender Briar Bache saved Alonardo’s low shot, but Alex Moore crashed the net and put in the rebound.
Alonardo scored what turned out to be the game-winning goal near the midway point of the second period on a similar play, as the Wilmington, Mass., native beat Bache on a loose puck in front after the initial shot by Lydia Grauer.
Dakota Golde scored on a give-and-go with Kayla Vespa to give the Saints a 3-0 lead late in the second period, with Alonardo picking up her second assist on the play.
“We had a good effort from quite a few players who stepped up with some added ice time tonight,” said St. Lawrence head coach Chris Wells ’92. “It was nice to see us play at the pace we did and come out with the win. There was good energy on the bench and we finished off some nice plays.”
Ann-Julie Deschenes scored the lone goal for the Stingers with less than three minutes to play, converting on a rebound in front of the net after a shot by Tracy-Ann Lavigne.
Brooke Wolejko and Sonjia Shelly split time in goal for the Saints, combining for 14 saves, while Bache stopped 26 shots for the Stingers.
The Saints, who are 5-0-1 on the season, will host Dartmouth and Harvard in ECAC Hockey games on Friday and Saturday, respectively. Both games are scheduled for 3 p.m. starts.
