BINGHAMTON, N.Y. – The Binghamton Senators beat the Rochester Americans 5-3 in the Amerks final visit to the Floyd L. Maines Veterans Memorial Arena this season. Phil Varone led the B-Sens offensively with two goals and two assists against his former team.
Justin Bailey notched his first of two goals of the evening 9:35 into the opening frame off an assist from former B-Sens player Alex Guptill. Binghamton went to the first intermission trailing 1-0 to the Amerks and 10-8 in shots.
Bailey doubled the lead for the visitors with an unassisted goal 6:27 into the second period. Binghamton responded with three goals over the next eight minutes. Varone struck first on the power play after being set up by Max McCormick and Jason Akeson just past the nine minute mark. Jerome Leduc, another player in the Rochester-Binghamton trade, scored four minutes later off assists from Guillaume Lepine and Danny Hobbs to tie the game for the B-Sens 2-2. Travis Ewanyk scored his fifth goal of the season after being set up with a beautiful pass from Varone on a shorthanded rush. Chad Ruhwedel brought the game back to a 3-3 tie with Bailey and Cole Schneider, another former B-Sen, picking up the assists. The teams went to the final intermission tied 3-3 with Binghamton being outshot 13-11.
Varone broke the tie 6:59 into the final period with his second goal of the night before newcomer Mike Borkowski added an insurance goal with less than six minutes remaining to push the final score to 5-3.
Chris Driedger turned away 32 shots to earn the win while Linus Ullmark had 26 stops in the losing effort.
